Daisies

Daisies and Asters ... can be tricky to differentiate. For the most part, daisies bloom earlier than asters BUT blooming times do over lap. Rats! I've put off posting on daisies ... just because I realize how much I don't know about them! Anyway, here is a feeble attempt at four different daisies from our area:

"Cut Leaved Daisy" (Erigeron compositus)

"Oxeye Daisy" (Leucanthemum vulgare)

An introduced species, while pretty, can get out of hand. Very common on roadsides and in fields ... so common that I just about didn't photograph it! I was interested to read that one can eat the young leaves ... reported to be sweet tasting. And the flower petals, should one choose to pull them off, can be made into wine ... like dandelion wine (seems a little labour intensive to me!).

"Trailing Daisy" (Erigeron flagellaris)
